Book Club: September

Last night was our monthly meeting of Wabaunsee Book Club. Wabaunsee is a tiny rural dot in the Flint Hills of Kansas:

Some 6-odd years ago, soon after moving out to the Flint Hills of Kansas, I sent out an email to my new farming and ranching neighbors, testing the local waters about forming a book club. I recall perhaps six positive respondents to this query. Fast-forward to 2010, and we have something like 17 names on our WBC list. A couple have moved, some are sporadic attendees, and some are simply cyber members at this point. But we have a strong base with which to share our love of books and such. Our website states:

The Wabaunsee Book Club is a group of women who get together once a month for light-hearted, fun discussions of books, newspapers, and favorite authors.

Once a month we'll meet in one-another's homes, with a title we've picked the previous month, and presumably read. Along with this, you can bring a book you've enjoyed reading to share; and remember, we're not working on our PhDs here (Well, OK, one of us is;) we're just having a couple of hours of fun. And food.

If you want to join such a book club in Wabaunsee, email us! Even if you don't want to read books & all, join us anyway; we'll vote you in as WBC Curmudgeon. You can pretend it's a Garden Club. Bring a friend.

And there you have it. We are joined very loosely by our community, our enjoyment of reading, and our pleasure in sharing the different genres of literature that we enjoy.

This month's title was The Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg. I think 6/7 of the WBC attendees last night had read all or part of the book. No negative opinions, no raves. What WAS fun was that several WBC members brought dishes taken from the recipes of said book. I will say, the Slow-Roasted Tomatoes were full-flavored and savory. Really nice!

The Butternut Soup with Pear, Cider, and Vanilla Bean was terrific. Our host lucked out yesterday evening, in that it was a lovely drizzly and grey evening - so apropos for soup. Had it been a NORMAL September day in Wabaunsee County, we might not have been so enthusiastic. It is a great soup, though, very worthy of an autumnal menu.

And the Winning Hearts and Minds Wedding Cake won my heart and mind, hands-down. Omigoodness!! Our family is not a fan of cakes, but I guarantee that this very dense, chocolaty, 1-Tbsp of flour cake will fit the bill for any of us. It is great, simply-put.

As for Molly Wizenberg's book, The Homemade Life: a quick and easy read, a very positive nod to her family (so refreshing!), and some good recipes, to boot!
