This evening we drove across the Viaduct (big ol' bridge) into Manhattan just at the beautiful sunset. It was really pretty - hot pink all across the western horizon.
But after we crossed the Viaduct, I saw all the neon and lit-up signs: Chilis, Marriott, Sears, Dillards...and many more.
There's a little island in South Carolina: Hilton Head. Whatever their city ordinance says exactly, I do not know, but I do know that signs and store fronts and such cannot be higher than the building itself, no neon or lit-up signs, and most signs are made of wood. So what people enjoy about Hilton Head (in addition to the ocean), are the trees and flowering shrubs and greenery all over the place. Heck - you hardly notice the McDonalds and the gas stations until you are right up on them. (Even Wal Mart is not right out in the open for all to see.)
I wish Manhattan, Kansas and all the cities in the US had the foresight and gumption to create prettier communities.
